Differences Between G1000 Variants: A Comparison of the GDU 1040, 1040A, 1044B, and 1055
Share
What are the differences between the Sim Gauges GDU 1040, 1040A, and 1044B? If you’ve been wondering the same, here’s a detailed explanation to clarify the distinctions.
While all these variants function in essentially the same way, the key difference lies in autopilot options on the left-hand bezel. Below is a breakdown of each model and its unique features
GDU 1040
The GDU 1040 closely resembles the 1044B but omits the autopilot buttons. However, it retains the HDG, ALT, and CRS knobs.
A common configuration pairs the 1040 as the primary flight display (PFD) and the 1044B as the MFD. This setup allows both the pilot and co-pilot to access autopilot knobs on their respective displays, while the autopilot buttons remain centrally located on the left-hand side of the MFD for shared accessibility.
This arrangement is often seen in aircraft like the Diamond DA40, DA42, DA50 RG, DA62, where the 1040 serves as the PFD and the 1055 is used as the MFD.
GDU 1040 is also often used in TECNAM P2006T, P2012 Traveler and Piper M350 / M500.
All series of Piper Archer use combination of GDU 1040 + 1055. GDU 1040 + 1040 is use in Piper Seminole and Seneca.
Bonanza G36 have two GDU 1040 units.

GDU 1044B
The GDU 1044B is among the more widely used variants and features a comprehensive set of autopilot controls. These include:
- Knobs for HDG (Heading), ALT (Altitude), and CRS (Course).
- Buttons for autopilot functions like AP, FD, HDG, ALT, NAV, VNV, APR, BC, VS, FLC, NOSE UP, and NOSE DN.
Its versatility and ease of use make it a popular choice for pilots looking for a fully integrated autopilot solution. Examples of aircraft that use it are Cessna 172 Skyhawk, 350 or 400, Turbo Stationair HD, Turbo Skyline, Skylane.
GDU 1055
The GDU 1055 is very similar to the 1044B, except for one difference which is a YD button instead of FD. This version is commonly found in aircraft like the Diamond DA42 and DA62, where it is often used as a multifunction display (MFD). Beechcraft Baron G58 have a set of GDU 1040 and 1055.

Understanding these differences will help you choose the right configuration for your needs, ensuring compatibility with your aircraft and enhancing cockpit functionality.
